I remember the feeling I had when I first joined a gym like it was yesterday. I was terrified. And it was amplified by the realization that “joining the gym” was no longer the next step. Using the gym was. But it doesn’t have to be terrifying. In fact, a consultation is the perfect way to get started! I will break down what you can expect when you schedule your fitness consultation.
You’re Not Alone
12 years ago, when I was signing up for my gym membership, they asked if I would like a free consultation. Try as they might to convince me, I was not about to let the epitome of all that intimidated me happen. (A fate worse than death was imagining “Hans“ break down in excruciating detail why I was fat and out of shape, how fat and out of shape I was, and tell me all the things I already know like “it comes down to eating right” and “you’ve just got to move more” with a smug “it’s just that easy” smirk on his gorgeous face.)
If you’ve ever felt similar emotions about joining a gym, then let me be the first to tell you that you are not alone. Keep in mind that each Anytime Fitness gym is going to be a bit different in consultation style, but these general experiences are what you can expect.
It’s Not a “Sales Pitch”
Yes, personal trainers make a living working with people beyond fitness consultations. And yes, a trainer would love to work with you after a connective “meet and greet.” With that being said, the whole goal of a consultation is to get you comfortable with your new digs. In this consultation, you’ll usually:
Learn about the equipment
Discover how the club can work for you personally
And get answers to any questions you’ve got in regards to getting started
Think of it as a personal “how-to” guide that grants you the option of scheduling more time if you so desire!
Learn to Use The Tools
I know absolutely nothing about cars other than they run on gas. If you needed work done on your car and paid a monthly fee to have unlimited access to a mechanic shop, that would be a dream come true! You could save a lot of time and even make your car better if you want! But if you don’t know how to use the tools in that mechanic shop, the usefulness goes right down the drain.
When you set up your consultation, you can fully expect to learn how to use most of the tools at your disposal. Figure out where everything is located, how to customize the machines for you, what certain equipment is used for, and much more! This way, you’ll be ready to do more than simply get on the treadmill/bike/elliptical for 30 minutes.
Establish a Connection
Although setting up your first fitness consultation can be scary, it would be a shame to have that eclipse the value of anchoring yourself to your club. When you meet with someone from your gym, you are having an experience with that person. You’ll learn each others names, get a chance to share interests, ask each other questions, be given and shown tips on how to maximize your potential, and forever have someone you can immediately go to if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Meeting the club staff and trainers also creates instant accountability—people who know why you’re there (in as much or as little detail as you choose) and now have a vested interest in seeing you succeed. People who greet you by name when you step through the doors and wonders where you were when you didn’t show up at your regular time last Wednesday.
Remember that your club exists for you, not the other way around. Go ahead, make that appointment…you won’t regret it.
